ANDeach person’s individual astrological chart has many layers – from planets and signs to houses and aspects – that help us understand our personality and life path. Color is another element in our natal chart that can help bring us closer to wholeness. This is called – you guessed it – color astrology.
Color astrology is essentially a mixture of astrology and color therapy, also known as color therapy. Whereas astrology is the study of the movement and cycles of planets in their respective orbits and our individual relationships with them, he says. theodora rose, a spiritual advisor and astrologer with a focus on color astrology, color therapy is a pseudoscience framework that uses color for healing. She adds that, in color therapy, each color is associated with a specific frequency that can have a physical, psychological and emotional effect on a person.
Color astrology, therefore, is a personalized way of working with color therapy. This is how it works: each sign and planet is associated with specific colors and the placement of these signs and planets in a person’s home map carries several implications, Theodora says. When a colored astrologer looks at an individual’s birth chart, their goal is to determine what colors and their meanings a person can work to heal, come more into their purpose and wholeness, and alleviate difficulties in their life.
A color astrologer determines which colors and their meanings a person can work to heal, come more into their purpose and wholeness, and alleviate difficulties in their life.
With that in mind, color astrology makes working with astrology more tangible, because people can learn from color charts and apply them in their lives. That said, color astrology is not new either and has been a component of Vedic astrology. And the use of color as a healing tool dates even further back. (For example, the philosopher Aristotle colors paired with the different elements: earth, air, fire and water.)
Curious to learn more about color astrology? Below, Theodora breaks down what a color astrology reading involves and what colors you might want to work with, according to your sun sign (which is what you normally look at when reading a horoscope).
How does a full-color astrology reading work
A color astrology reading is similar to a natal chart reading, but is viewed through the color lens and varies depending on the astrologer. Theodora, for example, will look at your natal chart and your traffic chart (what’s happening in the cosmos right now) and ask how you feel about specific colors and which ones make you feel comfortable or uncomfortable. Based on these findings, she will “prescribe” specific colors for you to work with that will resonate with your essence and help promote growth and integrity. And there may be different color prescriptions for certain areas of life, like health, fertility or money.
Depending on the planetary placements on your chart, the colors will have different meanings. The golden color, for example, can be a hue that increases someone’s confidence. But, it really depends on the person and their specific frame. Teodora tells me, for example, that gold is a comfort color that keeps me from growing and represents an attachment to what people think and the need to be loved by everyone, which she intuitively takes as work I’ve done.
“Silver would bring you more to wholeness,” says Theodora, noting that color can encourage me to lean more toward my mystical side and help me appreciate what really resonates with me. This looks like a very A suitable prescription at the moment, as I have been working to clarify what authentic life is like for me and what my goals will be in the next life. And silver is the color she advises me to work with to help me get there.
Which colors to work with, according to your sun sign
To reiterate, with color astrology, there is no specific meaning associated with each color. Instead, the meaning is deduced by looking at your natal chart as a whole and all the different planetary locations. But in general, Theodora says that each sign has an element, and each element is associated with certain colors. Working with the colors associated with your sun sign element is an easy way to start harnessing the power of color astrology. See how Theodora describes them:
water signs (Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces): aquatic colors such as blues and grays
earth signs (Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn): base, fall colors such as dark brown, orange, beige, nude and cream
fire signs (Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius): Intense, saturated colors such as fuchsia, gold, red, bright orange, and other fiery colors.
air signs (Gemini, Libra and Aquarius): Get bogged down in saturated colors, so soft pastels and metallics are better suited.
How to work with colors in astrology
So what is it like to “work with a color” and use color astrology in practice? It will depend on your individual birth chart and how the color astrologer recommends working with color. As a general starting point for getting started with color, Theodora recommends being more aware of the colors you’re actively choosing to wear and surround yourself with, as each color evokes certain feelings. She notes that you can see the use of color at play in marketing and advertising, especially. For example, fast food restaurants are often red, as it is a stimulating color that makes you feel rushed, while a hospital may use softer colors that help to calm the nervous system.
Theodora adds that just having a conscious awareness of the colors associated with your sun sign and where and when they appear in your life and the visceral reaction you have to them can be powerful. Other ways to work with these colors can be by focusing on them during meditation, dressing them up (through clothes, accessories, makeup, etc.) and decorating your space with them.
